A New Journal - - Eagle View
This blog post will be a first and a last at the same time. This post represents a new start on the Eagle View Blog and will be the last post on this new blog for 2024!
The PullinChocks blog has run its' 10 year course. This new Eagle View blog will be our journal as we begin a new chapter living in a sticks & bricks home again, which we have affectionately named Eagle View. We have recently completed a switcheroo on our truck and RV trailer, going from very big to much smaller. We hope for at least awhile that the Eagle View living is part time as we continue traveling in our new smaller RV setup. We envision parking in many more places that were inaccessible to us with the bigger RV rig. Our first few trips in 2024 sure proved that we can camp in driveways without much hook up for more than a week at a time.
After the cross country trips earlier this year visiting family & friends, we did spend a few weeks at Eagle View in October, November & December. Our main activities during this time were the usual hiking, fishing, Thanksgiving with some of our Swan Valley family, and Christmas with Shilo & Hunter..
We did a first for us and that was put our 10 ft sit in kayaks onto the mighty Snake River. We discovered the rapid where Palisades Creek enters the river. It was a kayak swamper. My lesson was always wear chest waders in cold weather when attempting this. This time I went with hip waders, so I got to sit on a cold wet butt for the next 5 hours. It was a beautiful run, but we mis-calculated the distance-time. We were thinking 3 miles and 2 hours or so. It turned out to be about 11 miles and 5 hours! Oops, who planned this float?! A quiet section of river below with Mt Baldy views in the background below.
Our season ending hike in Grand Teton National Park. We went just after Thanksgiving as the park closes to automotive traffic Dec 1st and then opens to snow-machines. That made this a last of the season opportunity for us to get in there. The park is very popular so we avoid it in the summer to miss all the traffic and crowds. This end of season is the way to go for us, much less traffic and attendance. The pay off of this hike was Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Below we made to the Hidden Falls.
Gari wanted to ride up Bear Creek, since we had not been up there since they closed the road a couple of years ago due to a rock slide. The ride was perfect for Bugsly our side by side buggy. The detour route was posted for No Trailers, but as we do in Idaho, we saw several trailers that made it up there. We are not sure how they got through some of the narrow turns, but we do know, not much stops an Idahoan.
A view down on Bear Creek from the road. We saw many hunt camps set up along our route. It was a good day and ride.
Below is Gari on a fly fishing float down the Teton River with our friend Scott. The Teton mountain peaks provide the backdrop for Gari in this shot.
We saw at least 6 moose that day on the Teton River. We saw two mature bulls, and a couple cows with their calfs, which is what we see below; mama & big baby.
Our masterful fishing friend Scott casts his fly on the Teton River..
Back to the Grand Teton end of season hike and additional sights along the way. Below we see a shot on the way up to Inspiration Point.
A peek of Jenny Lake through the trees.
Gari stopping along the way.
Steve standing in the gap.
We received snow in time for Christmas; this was about 4-8" depending on where we measured. View from our Irwin Rd driveway.
A new haul of fishing flys. In the winter Sportsman's Warehouse sells flys for $1 apiece. I thought about setting myself up with another fly tying kit, but the prices were ridiculous, like so many other things. I decided that at $1 per fly I can get over 1,000 flys for the same price and I don't have to tie them myself. That will be a lifetime of flys for me so it was an easy decision for me.
Merry Christmas to all! All the best in the New Year, hope to see you there!
